Pilot Training

By the end of 2009, the Royal Thai Air Force started their Gripen training in Sweden. The first commander of the RTAF Gripen fleet, Group Captain Jackkrit Thammavichai, led a group of four Thai pilots on their flight training in Sweden. At 14.00 on 23 April 2010, Group Captain Thammavichai and the other pilots took of for their first solo flight in the Gripen aircraft. After a successful flight the delighted Group Captain declared that “Gripen is a pilot's fighter”.

The training programme was finished in December 2010. It also included Combat Readiness Training (CRT) as well as flight training with the latest versions of the Gripen fighter.

A new batch of RTAF Gripen pilots will be trained in Sweden during 2011.

Technical Training

So far, a total of 40 Thai Air Force technicians has received Gripen training in Sweden. The training started in January 2010, when the first 20 technicians arrived for their initial maintenance type-conversion course on the Gripen fighter. The technical training also included On the Job Training (OJT) at the Swedish Air Force Wings F 7 in Såtenäs and F 17 in Ronneby. The Thai technicians has also spent time at Saab’s Gripen manufacturing hub in Linköping.

Since November 2010, a Swedish support team and a field service representative is based in Surat Thani  to support the RTAF in implementing the Gripen system.

"The Gripens are our first step in the development of a data-link system and network-centric technologies. I was overjoyed and filled with pride to see the Royal Thai Air Force's (RTAF) Gripen taking to the skies. It's such a beautiful sight for me." says Air Chief Marshal Ittaporn Subhawong, Commander in Chief, Royal Thai Air Force, Thailand
